Mazar Bot: The Mobile Malware That Could Erase Your Phone
A security vulnerability called Mazar Bot, which was first discovered several months ago, has recently been seen actively targeting Android devices.
This mobile malware has the capability to gain root access to your devices, monitor phone and text messages, hijack sessions and completely erase your phone.
The Mazar Bot spreads to Android users via SMS/MMS messages crafted with a malicious link the user is prompted to download. Antivirus detection for this advanced malware is currently still very low.
The message with a malicious link reads:
"You have received a multimedia message from +[country code] [sender number] Follow the link http: //www.mmsforyou [.] Net / mms.apk to view the message."
How to protect yourself and keep your smart phone safe:
- Do NOT click on links embedded in SMS or MMS messages
- Install an antivirus app and ensure it's updated on your Android device(s)
- Turn off the installation of apps from sources other than the play store option (Go to Settings > Security)
- Keep your Wi-Fi turned off when not in use and do NOT connect to unknown or unsecured wireless networks
