A "Perfect Storm" of Complacency: The Third Annual Survey of Level 4 Merchant PCI Compliance Trends

In November 2011, ControlScan completed its third annual survey of Level 4 merchant trends and attitudes regarding compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). This year’s survey, conducted in association with Merchant Warehouse, collected responses from 621 Level 4 merchants.

A "Perfect Storm" of Complacency: The Third Annual Survey of Level 4 Merchant PCI Compliance White PaperThree key findings from the survey indicate that merchants have a “What? Me Worry?” attitude with regard to sensitive cardholder data:

  1. Risk of financial losses doesn’t seem to be a big motivator for Level 4 merchants to aggressively comply with the PCI DSS.
  2. A sizeable minority of Level 4 merchants continue to believe that PCI compliance does not make their business more secure.
  3. Little progress has been made in increasing awareness of PCI compliance among small merchants.

The survey did reveal some small steps of progress compared to last year. Of the 2011 respondents expressing awareness of PCI, more merchants have validated that they are PCI compliant and more are taking actions to comply with PCI and enhance data security.
